THE PERSISTENCE OF FAMILY

The images in "The Persistence of Family" interrogate the role family relationships and history play in shaping our sense of ourselves and our place in the world. They are composites of my family photographs, photographs I took of my children, and the New England landscapes in which they and I grew up. Driven by a longing for connection, generations reach for each other across time. These pictures suggest that perhaps the present, in each of us, contains both the past and the future. Ultimately, this series portrays the layered process of becoming, and the complex interweaving of time, place, and identity.

Photography is often thought to be the medium capturing the "decisive moment." In Diana Cheren Nygren's work, it is not singular frozen moments that we encounter, but rather the passage of time through juxtapositions of photographs from the present and the past. I was entranced by Nygren's ethereal and ghostly tableaus that explore memory, place, and identity. The interplay of images illuminates the past's intrinsic and significant role in the present.
